Blessy again with Culcutta News

The much awaited Blessy movie 'Calcutta News' opened today in 44 centres. The film featuring Dileep and Meera Jasmine in the lead, also features Manasa, Vimala Raman, Bindu Panikkar, Innocent, Indrajith , Brinda and Unni Shivapal in prominent roles.
Dileep plays Ajith Thomas - a gutsy investigative televison reporter who is behind sex rackets trapping innocent girls. The movie is the first one that is entirely shot at Kolkatta.
The director Blessy says that this is his technically best film. Cinematographed by veteran S Kumar, the film is edited by Vijay Shankar.
The music of the film is by Debojyoti Mishra, an onetime assistant to Salil Chowdhary . The early reports suggest the film to be a brilliant effort and a sure shot hit at the box office.

The Hrithik Roshan-Aishwarya Rai starrer JODHA AKBAR, to be directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar has finally found a producer. As per reports in a tabloid, the epic love story will be made on a budget of Rs 37 crore and produced by UTV.

Ashutosh informed the tabloid that it's an epic love story and not a mere historical. In his opinion, such a love story has not been attempted as yet. He added that he required a huge set-up to take care of various aspects like marketing etc. They are planning to shoot the film at various locations in Rajasthan sometime around this October. A R Rahman is doing the music, Neeta Lulla is designing the costumes and Javed Akhtar will be writing the lyrics.

Dileep was quite happy in his world of advertisements. He had no intention of joining the film industry as a music composer.
Around 1991, ace Tamil movie director Manirathnam was on the lookout for a new music composer for his films. His long-standing, fruitful association with the doyen of Tamil film music Ilaiyaraja had come to an end when the latter reportedly made some disdainful comments during the making of Manirathnam's 'Dhalapathi'.
One day, at an awards function for excellence in the field of advertising, Manirathnam chanced upon Dileep, who received the award for the best ad jingle, which he had composed for the popular Leo Coffee ad.
At the celebrations party that followed the awards presentation ceremony, Manirathnam was introduced to the young composer by his cousin Sharada Trilok of Trish Productions. Rahman had produced some outstanding work for Trish Productions.

She (Sharada Trilok) had words of praise for the young composer. Manirathnam got curious and requested him for a sample of his wares. The composer readily complied and invited the director over to his studio.
Manirathnam turned up at the studio only after 3 months, where the 24-year-old lad played out a tune that he had been pushed into composing by his school friend G. Bharat Bala alias Bala when they both had been greatly disturbed by the socio-political tensions in South India over the Cauvery river waters issue.
Listening to the tune that was played, Manirathnam was hooked instantly. Dileep effortlessly 'qualified' in Manirathnam's eyes as 'deserving', and thus, when the appropriate opportunity came along, he decided to give him a 'break'.
Without a second thought he signed on the composer to score the music for his next venture, produced by the veteran Tamil director K Balachander for his respected 'Kavithalayaa' banner. The film was 'Roja'. That tune took the avatar of the song 'Thamizha Thamizha' in 'Roja'.
Rahman's D-Day arrived when 'Roja' was released on Saturday, August 15th, 1992 . It was awaited with curiosity since it was Manirathnam's first film without Ilaiyaraja. Skeptics doubted the ability of a 25-year old debutant. The entire film world and filmgoers were in for a pleasant surprise. Rahman delivered the goods and how? To call the music just a 'Super Hit' would be an understatement. The music of the film became a phenomenal success and revolutionized modern day Indian film music.
Rahman became a household name in Tamil Nadu overnight. 'Roja' won every conceivable award in music that year. Rahman even got the 'Rajat Kamal' for best Music Director at the National Film Awards, the first time ever by a debutante. Every producer was trying to impress upon Rahman to work for his/her projects. Because of all this, Rahman decided to leave the jingles world and concentrate on film music.
Throughout India , Rahman's other work were also received wholeheartedly by music lovers. However, it was a Ram Gopal Varma's 'Rangeela' - Rahman's first original Hindi score - which truly established him as one of the prominent music composers of Bollywood. In North India too, Rahman became a 'star' overnight, and as is the tradition in Bollywood, suddenly all kinds of producers were seen queuing outside his house.
Rahman however, wisely chose to stay selective and took on only projects that interested him. He also made it a point to work entirely on his own terms and conditions. He still works only from Chennai where he lives; has his own studio in his house from where he works; likes to work only at nights.
Since 'Roja', he has created music for mega blockbuster films including 'Pudhiya Mugam', 'Gentleman', 'Kizhakku Cheemaiyilae', 'Duet', 'Kadhalan', 'Bombay', 'May Madham', 'Indian', 'Muthu', 'Kadhal Desam', 'Love Birds', 'Sapney', 'Jeans', 'Dil Se..', 'Kadhalar Dhinam', 'Sangamam', 'En Swasa Katrae' and many others.
His 1995 soundtrack for ' Bombay ' crossed 5 million units and Rahman had arrived as the 'King of Indian Music' with sales of more than 50 million albums over a period of 3 years. The success continued with films like 'Dil Se...' with Manirathnam, and ' Taal ' with Subhash Ghai. After working in many movies of the typical popular genre, several offbeat reputed directors and producers like Govind Nihalani, Shyam Benegal, Deepa Mehta have worked with Rahman in movies like 'Thakshak', 'Zubeidaa', 'Fire', and '1947 Earth'.
His music for the film 'Lagaan' was well appreciated by music lovers all over the world.

HIS CHILDHOOD

AS Dileep Kumar, who now is familiar with the name A R Rahman all over the world, was born in Chennai, on Thursday, the 6th of January 1966 , in a musically rich Tamil Mudhaliyar family.
RK Sekhar, his father, was a well-known music composer and arranger in South India . Music was Dileep's passion since childhood. He is the second of four siblings.
Being son of a renowned composer, music was in Dileep's blood. His musical tutelage had begun under his father. Interestingly, it was the 'Univox' and 'Claviolin', the early avatar of the present-day 'synthesizer' that Sekhar had imported from Singapore , which fashioned Dileep's romance with octaves.

That time, Dileep was not allowed to play with it, it being 'valuable'. But as they say, 'say 'no' to the children, and they're sure to do it!' Dileep started playing with the black and white keys of his father's musical instrument when he was just four. In no time he started to play his father's songs, and to recognize the different musical notes. Later he learnt Indian classical music formally, Carnatic from Dakshinamoorthy and N Gopalakrishnan and Hindustani from Krishnan Nair. He took classes in film music from Nithyanandham and Western Classical from Jacob John. He also learnt playing guitar at the age of 10. "I've spent all my life playing second fiddle... It is only through my son that I can hope to win some day..." This was the remark of the late R K Sekhar, musician and father of the today's musical phenomenon A R Rahman. Dileep's father, R Kulasekhar or RK Sekhar, as he preferred to call himself, was originally native of a place called Kizhaanoor near Thiruvalloor in the Tamil Nadu State of India . Being the son of Rajagopala Bhagavathar, a reputed Harikatha exponent in South India , Sekhar had music in his genes. He had picked up the nuances of Carnatic music from V Dakshinamoorthy, and had started serving as his assistant music director.

Sekhar had the musical mettle to make it big, and because of this born talent, he got chance to work as the lieutenant of many prominent music directors in the South, to name a few: Devarajan, Salil Chowdhary, and V Dakshinamoorthy. Sekhar Master's talent was even noticed by famous Hindi composer SD Burman in those times, and reportedly the latter had also invited him to arrange music for his assignment. At the age of 31, Sekhar master got married with Kasthuri, who was 17 then. Their marriage took place in Tirupathi, the abode of Lord Venkateshwara in the Andhra Pradesh state of India . After the marriage the couple had settled down in Mylapore in Chennai.

The couple was blessed with three daughters and a son, Kanchana, Dileep, Bala, and Israth. Sekhar Master would be very busy; yet he was fond of Dileep. Dileep's early memories are of the studio where he went with his father. Dileep's inspiration has always been his father. Sekhar was a workaholic musician, who would go to seven-eight places for work each day. Famous Tamil musician, Ilaiyaraja used to play the combo organ for background music recording sessions with Sekhar Master at the age of 17.

Sekhar introduced numerous talented artists, including singer Yesudas, into the Malayalam filmdom. According to many musicians who were Sekhar Master's contemporary, he had quite a hand on the harmonium, and also displayed an extraordinary musical sensibility. But his day never came. The handful of Malayalam movies he scored music for, fell by the wayside. Endless hours of rehearsals, re-recordings, and song recordings - mostly fuelled with tea and dry bun (Porai as it is called in Tamil) - took their toll on Sekhar's health, and he was bedridden with stomach related maladies. The man, who literally lived in the recording studios, spent his last days in different hospitals. His assistants would attend him in his hospital bed for the musical score. Sekhar succumbed in 1976 aged 42. Unfortunately that was the same year when his first movie as an independent music director had released. Rumors still abound that Master was the victim of black magic by his rivals. Dileep was just nine years old.

The years that led to Sekhar's premature and painful passing and those that followed it were the purgatory that the boy progressed through. In the course of time the catharsis swept away the old thoughts and brought in a new faith...
